Are You Ready for REAL ID? New Travel Rules Start May 7, 2025

Starting May 7, 2025, the rules for flying in the U.S. are changing! If you’re 18 or older, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings.

What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID looks like a regular driver’s license but has a star in the top right corner. It’s part of a federal law designed to make ID cards more secure.

To get one, you’ll need to visit your local DMV and bring documents that prove:

  • Your full legal name

  • Your Social Security number

  • Your address

For details, visit: www.dhs.gov/real-id

Other ID options if you don’t have a REAL ID:

  • A valid U.S. passport

  • An Enhanced Driver’s License (available in select states)

  • A military ID

  • Other government-issued ID (check the full list on tsa.gov)

What about children?
Good news! Kids under 18 do NOT need a REAL ID to fly domestically with an adult. The TSA doesn’t require ID for minors at airport security, but some airlines might—so double-check with your airline before flying.

Why act now?
Don’t wait until the last minute. Lines at the DMV will get longer as the deadline approaches. If you travel often—or are planning a trip—now is the time to check if your license is REAL ID-compliant.
